Qatar University (QU) and Qatar Chemical Company (Q-Chem) announced on Thursday 18 June the winners of the
Protective Workwear for Women Design Competition. The winners and participants were awarded appreciation plaques and certificates.
The celebration ceremony took place at the Diplomatic Club and was attended by officials from both organizations, representatives from Qatar
Petroleum (QP), contest participants and their parents.
The competition was launched in October last year and was targeted to QU’s female chemical
engineering students and a limited number of art students. The competition closed in April this year following which a Q-Chem panel evaluated
the entries, selected the finalists and executed the winning designs.
The new work dress is an innovative design and is the first of its kind in
the region. It will be a compulsory coverall uniform worn by female employees at Q-Chem’s plants. The new uniform was designed to accommodate
female engineers working in the oil and gas industry in Qatar. It includes head gear and is in compliance with religious and traditional values.
QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad said: “We are very proud that our students participated in this Q-Chem initiative. I applaud their
creativity and vision in the design of these uniforms. At QU, it is our mission to produce well-equipped young women and men to contribute their
knowledge and skills they acquired at QU towards the development of the country. The students acquitted themselves very well”.
General Manager of
Q-Chem Ahmed Al Emadi, said: “This design competition affirms Q-Chem’s commitment to supporting Qatar’s educational institutions in the
Qatarization process and seeks to create proper work environment conditions for women working in our plants. Q-Chem has been working closely
with Qatar University in establishing programs and courses relevant to the petrochemical industry”.
Research guidelines for the competition were
set by Qatar University. Participating students were required to research coverall uniforms currently worn in the industry -- their research
findings were used as a basis for the designs.
Important to the design was the incorporation of Q-Chem safety standards and guidelines as well
as adherence to the regulations set out by the US Operational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The yearly Qatari town hall meeting which involves Q-Chem management and the all nationals. The meeting will be held early in October.
